Introduction

Old buildings and historical sites help to keep the past alive. They shape the country’s heritage and allow many to reminisce the days gone by. Singapore places great importance on the preservation of national monuments as these represent significant markers in her road towards nation building. The Preservation of Monuments Board was set up in 1971 to safeguard monuments that are “of historic, cultural, traditional, archaeological, architectural, artistic or symbolic significance and national importance” (http://www.pmb.sg/).  Through its efforts, present and future generations can learn to appreciate and experience visually Singapore’s rich and colourful history.

This Resource Guide serves as a guide to help you locate information on the on-going efforts to maintain and uphold Singapore’s lively past. These resources are available at National Library Singapore as well as on the Internet.
