Introduction

Folk and fairy tales Asian Childrens Collection

Folktales or also known as folklore or traditional literature, is a literature of the people.

Born of the oral tradition, the stories told have been kept alive over the centuries being passed down from generation to generation. Traditional literature encompasses tales that can explain variegated human conditions, revealing human strengths and weaknesses, the individual’s relationship with the world and others.

It forms the foundation of understandings of life as expressed in modern literature. Folktales express the wishes, hopes, fears and desires of ordinary people.
