Introduction

Illustration for children’s books became an art form in its own right from the latter 19th Century, and still continues to evolve and push the boundaries of book art today. Artists in Britain and America found both commercial success and recognition as artists from their efforts in illustration. By investigating the work and lives of noted illustrators for children, it becomes apparent that they were first and foremost artists, and that their art also became an integral part of their lives.

This resource guide provides information about selected children’s book artists in Britain and America. All books listed are available at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library and electronic resources are available via all NLB libraries or from home.
