The above are some of the headlines in The Straits Times in the last 6 months. They tell of the aspirations of a young country to retain and nurture values; the struggles the people experience as they try to reconcile values in a 21st century economy that seems to speak more of consumerism, materialism and being ahead of one’s neighbour.

 

I therefore applaud NLB’s commendable effort to produce this bibliography of Asian values. Parents and teachers will find it a handy resource to impart to / imprint Asian values on their children.

 

Let me echo Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s clarion call: “Hold on to core values amid changes” (The Straits Times, 2 February 2011). With this bibliography, we will be able to take a step nearer to achieving this goal.
