闽南人

新加坡华人族群中以福建人占多数。福建省称“闽”，因此，“福建人”也称“闽南人”。新加坡的闽南人主要来自泉州、漳州和永春三府。广义的闽南人也包括厦门、福州、兴化等人士。
福建人士自19世纪起，南来新加坡谋生。他们主要从事的行业包括转口贸易、航运与驳船业、银行业、种植业、建筑行、饮食业、茶庄等。当时，泉州、漳州和厦门是中国对外通商的主要港口，因此许多到新马一代的闽南人多数从商。
这些南来的福建移民，他们也把家乡的文化传统和信仰带来这里。一些闽籍商人也资助文教事业如：办报和兴建学校。闽南人也自发地成立庙宇和互助团体，例如：天福宫、福建会馆等。这些团体组织的出现也催化领导层的形成。

The Minnan people

The Chinese population in Singapore is mostly made up of the Hokkien dialect group who came from Fujian in China.Fujian Province is also known as the Min Province, hence the Hokkiens are also known as Minnan people. The Hokkiens in Singapore mostly came from Quanzhou, Zhangzhou and Yongchun. In a broader coverage, Minnan people also include those from Xiaman, Fuzhou, Xinghua.

The Hokkiens started arriving in Singapore looking for jobs in the 19th century. They are commonly found working in the entrepot industry, shipping and sawmill industry, banking, plantations, construction, food and beverages. At that time, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou and Xiaman were the main trading ports of China, and hence the Hokkiens who came to Malaya were mostly businessmen.

These immigrants brought along their culture and beliefs to Malaya. Some of the businessmen were involved in financing or sponsoring cultural and educational activities such as starting newspapers and schools. The Hokkiens also started their own temple associations and other charitable organisations. For example, Thian Hock Keng Temple, and the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. The people who managed these organisations soon became the leaders in the community.
