Kjetil Trædal Thorsen (b. 1958 in Haugesund, Norway - ) spent his childhood years on the coastal island of Karmøy, Norway.  He studied architecture at the Technische Universität Graz in Austria and in 1982, joined Espen Tharaldsen (Arbeidsgruppen Hus) in Bergen.  A year later, he left for Stockholm and worked for Ralph Erskine and then in 1985, returned to Haugesund and worked for David Sandved.

In 1987, he co-founded Snøhetta Architecture and Landscape and is currently a senior partner and managing director of the firm.  Some of Snøhetta's more celebrated works include the Bibliotheca Alexandria in Egypt, the Oslo Opera House and the Olympic Museum in Lillehammer, Norway.  The Oslo Opera House was awarded the Mies Van Der Rohe Award in 2009.

Thorsen founded the first architectural gallery in Norway, the Galleri ROM, in 1986.  He was active in the Norwegian Architects Association (NAL) in 1986-1987 and 1999-2002, and became a member of the European Cultural Parliament in 2002.  He also taught at the University of Innsbruck in Austria between 2004 and 2008, leading the Institute for Experimental Studies in Architecture together with Zaha Hadid Architects' Patrick Schumacher.

In 2008, he was awarded the Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav distinction by the king of Norway for his contribution to architecture.
