Introduction
The term "modern art" can be defined in various ways. It can refer to a time period (usually late 19th to early 20th century), to certain movements or styles (eg. expressionism, surrealism, etc.), and to works that are characterised by a deliberate break from traditional forms, techniques and styles. In Singapore, the "modern" era in art emerged in the early 20th century and gained momentum around the 1950s with the works of artists such as Liu Kang, Chen Wen Hsi, Georgette Chen, and Cheong Soo Pieng. Since then, it has and continues to evolve in tandem with the social and economic changes happening in Singapore.
This PathFinder serves as a guide to help you locate resources on modern art in Singapore, which are available at the National Library Board libraries as well as on the Internet.
