Introduction

The performing arts has been defined as a type of activity where humans recite words, produce music or execute movement in front of other humans, either in person or through recorded media. Their purpose is to entertain or enlighten. In a nutshell, this is a form of art which can be publicly performed. Types of performing art include drama, comedy, musicals, theatre, opera, music, dance, cabaret, mime, puppetry, circus, vaudeville, television, film, video and radio.

Singapore’s first performing arts library is located at Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. Called library@esplanade, it has a strong collection focussed on theatre, dance, music and film. This pathfinder is a guide to help you to source for information on the performing arts, which is also available at the National Library Board libraries as well as on the Internet.
