Introduction

It is a common misconception that ‘researchers’ are those armed with a Ph.D..When was the last time you tried to discover something new? Well, that is research. We conduct research all the time in our daily activities, such as, dropping a breadcrumb in a wok of oil to check its temperature.

It is also a trend in local educational instituitions that have adopted the problem-based approach, requiring students to learn through their research process.

On a larger scale, the Singapore Government has been offering attractive grants to encourage the growth of the research industry. A sum of about SGD 1.4 billion was allocated to strengthen Research & Development capabilities in FY2009.

What are the methods to conduct a research? This publication, ‘Research Methodologies’, aims to provide our patrons with an introduction to selected methods on research. The topics selected are based on common enquiries frequently received by librarians at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library.

We hope that this publication will provide our patrons with a useful guide to the topic of research methodology.
