Introduction
Thomas Yeo (b. 22 April 1936, Singapore -), winner of the Cultural Medallion in 1984, represents one of Singapore's second-generation artists who studied in the West. His work became infused with Western ideas, though at the same time he never completely abandoned the images and impressions of Asia, and these featured prominently in his work. He has been described as one of, if not the first Singaporean abstract artist, and abstraction has been an abiding feature of his work since the 1960s. However, landscape, too, is a prominent and continual aspect of his work, portraying images gleaned from his many travels. He gradually gravitated towards mixed media collages in which he used recycled ideas from his landscape paintings, and incorporating a multitude of available materials.
