Overview
Universal design is an all-inclusive design approach, which seeks to create products and environments for diverse users – from toddlers to the elderly to the handicapped and more. It involves holistic and integrated applications right from the conceptual design stage.
Many factors contribute to the rising search for good universal design. These include an aging and disabled population that is growing rapidly worldwide, a competitive and globalised business scene, and communications technologies that are increasing in sophistry.
Universal design is not just design that obeys national laws in the construction of accessible buildings. It is design that strives to give everyone equal opportunities at home, work or play. While the teaching and evaluating of good universal design may still be in its early stages, nonetheless it is an important issue being communicated more urgently in the 21st century.
